Tax evasion of more than five billion rupees through mis-declaration exposed

KARACHI : Appraisement Collectorate South Karachi foiled an attempt to taxes worth 5.4 billion rupees by the Centralized Assessment Unit working under faceless assessment system. An attempt was made to clear the federal excise duty worth more than 5 billion rupees. The Customs Department has registered a case against the two importers, M/s.Global Textiles, M/s.Maher International, and the clearing agent, M/s. Sakina Enterprise, for attempting to damage the public treasury by evading duty through misdeclaration, while efforts are being made to arrest the accused. According to the sources, the customs department conducted physical examination and laboratory tests of the imported consignments and it was confirmed that the duty evasion was continuing by the importers by this mis-declaration. Chief Collector of Customs Appraisal South, Jameel Nasir, says that this successful operation is a practical example of faceless assessment system’s transparent, effective and accurate assessment of imported goods, evasion of duty taxes, prevention of fraud and stabilization of the country’s economy and protection of the national treasury. The Chief Collector has directed all the Collectors of the Appraisal Collectorates to complete the post-clearance verification of import items through the respective Assistant and Deputy Collectors of the Appraisal Groups in a timely manner
